And Hyper-V Server does not support most of the roles and features of Standard or Datacenter, but that is because of the way Hyper-V Server is licensed – those roles and features are removed to prevent the end user from violating the licensing of Hyper-V Server. The free hyperv server is just windows standard core command line only, no gui. If you are learning hyper v I would install standard server with the gui desktop experience. There negligible performance different between gui and core installations.

In a production environment windows standard core is the best option, simply because there is less there for a hacker or virus to attack. As long as you are using Windows standard exclusively for its hyperv role you can install it without using one of your licences. This also will allow you to use features not available in the free hyper v server, provided that you can justify using them for the hyper v server roll. Brand Representative for StarWind. Why do you want to have things complicated?!?

Actually that’s not true. Hyper-V Server can not do anything much beyond being a hypervisor. Question here would be what would you do after all the stuff is setup i. In case you are planning to have couple VM servers, you can build Failover Cluster. As good alternative, you can follow other route.

Get started with Windows Server: R2. Windows Server Essentials edition is a cloud-connected first server designed for small businesses with up to 25 users and 50 devices. If you are considering installing any version of Windows Server Essentials, we would encourage you to consider Microsoft Hyper-V Server provides a simple and reliable virtualization solution to help organizations improve their server utilization and reduce costs.

The latest release of Hyper-V Server provides new and enhanced features that can help you deliver the scale and performance needs of your mission-critical workloads. Get started with Hyper-V Server: R2 Windows Admin Center is a locally deployed, browser-based app for managing Windows servers, clusters, hyper-converged infrastructure, as well as Windows 10 PCs. Giving you full control over all aspects of your server infrastructure, Windows Admin Center is particularly useful for managing servers on private networks that are not connected to the Internet.

Note that Windows Server offers much more than just the Hyper-V role. You can deploy any other role on your server running Windows Server Each type of Hyper-V deployment has its own advantages and disadvantages. Internet Explorer is a part of Windows Explorer. This is a less user-friendly solution, but it improves security. In the GUI mode, even if you use only tools such as MMC Microsoft Management Console for server management, without using Internet Explorer, Internet Explorer is still present in your system and could constitute a threat for your server.

This is the reason many IT specialists may prefer installing the Core Edition of Windows Server operating system in some situations. At the same time, some basic graphics features used for displaying windows that are not Explorer-related are available in the headless edition of Windows Server and Hyper-V Server One additional advantage of the standalone Hyper-V Server is that the smaller number of included components means you need less frequent updates patches and, as a result, fewer reboot events for the server.

A type 1 hypervisor is a native hypervisor installed directly on hardware, whereas a type 2 hypervisor runs as an application on the installed operating system. The trick is that when Windows Server with the Hyper-V role is loaded, Hyper-V is initialized first, before starting Windows, which makes it type 1 hypervisor.

The main differences are in licensing host operating systems and guest Windows operating systems — Hyper-V Server is free, but guest Windows installed on VMs must be licensed separately.

A type 2 hypervisor is a hypervisor that runs as an application on top of an existing operating system. In contrast, a type 1 hypervisor is known as a bare-metal hypervisor that runs directly on top of the physical server hardware. In what we described — installing the Windows Server operating system and then installing the Hyper-V role, would this not be type 2? Microsoft does something very interesting here when you install the Hyper-V role. Once the role is installed, Hyper-V is instantiated first before Windows Server In fact, once the role is installed, Windows Server runs on top of the hypervisor.

This qualifies Hyper-V as a type 1 hypervisor. Additionally, it can make sense for running VDI workloads as well. After adding the server role, the server reboots and Hyper-V is instantiated first, then booting the Windows Server operating system. This is not the same licensing wise as Hyper-V Server.
